Our Heritage

Girlock SA (Pty) Ltd is a proudly South African automotive brake manufacturer with a heritage spanning more than five decades. Our origins lie in the combined legacy of two internationally respected brake brands — Girling and Lockheed — whose engineering expertise and manufacturing excellence formed the foundation of Girlock.

Girling, a division of Lucas Industries plc, established operations in South Africa in 1968, introducing advanced braking technology and engineering capability to the local automotive industry. Earlier, in 1958, Lockheed, the automotive brake tradename of Automotive Products plc (UK), had already established a presence in South Africa, supplying high-quality clutch components to vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket.

In 1972, the South African operations of Girling and Lockheed were merged to form Girlock, creating a focused local platform for the design, manufacture, and supply of automotive braking systems built to international standards and suited to local operating conditions.

Growth, Listing and Local Ownership

During the 1970s and 1980s, Girlock expanded its manufacturing capability and market presence, becoming a recognised supplier within the South African automotive sector. In 1986, the company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), with approximately 60% UK ownership, reinforcing strong international governance and technical alignment.

In June 1990, Girlock was acquired by Auto Industrial Holding Company, a diversified South African industrial group with interests including:

  • AL Spartan Machining (Isando)

  • SG and grey iron foundries in Isando and Wadeville

  • Hubco Forgings

  • A substantial portfolio of industrial and commercial property assets

Following this acquisition and subsequent restructuring, Girlock has operated as a privately owned company since 1991, continuing to strengthen its local manufacturing capability while building on its international engineering heritage.
